A personal exploration of Tokyo captured over 72 intense hours—little sleep, endless discovery, and pure creative instinct.
This series documents Tom Munro’s first visit to Japan’s iconic capital, photographing what drew him in: the chaos, the contrasts, the sensory overload. It’s an entirely personal piece about what he saw, felt, heard and smelled. The images evolved into collage work that felt truer to the frenetic energy he experienced—tearing pictures apart and layering them back together to recreate that same sense of pace.
Munro wanted to challenge himself creatively, stepping away from the controlled studio environment to embrace spontaneity and trust the moment. Working with Anna, a dancer who understood the collaborative process instinctively, they embarked on an explorative journey together.
The project explores the antagonisms of light and darkness, old and new—drawing inspiration not from clichés, but from Tokyo’s unique artistic depiction of its own culture.
Shot on Leica S2 with Summarit-S 35mm f/2.5 Asph.
