About Tom Munro

A respected photographer and director, Tom Munro creates imagery that feels both refined and deeply human. His work draws viewers in, inviting an intimate connection. What inspires him is not just the image, but the emotion and atmosphere that lie behind it.

Over the years, Munro has developed a distinctive, timeless style that is sensual yet sensitive, often shaped by a cinematic approach to composition. His photographs linger beyond the moment, each frame centred on the subject and exploring the depth of their personality, presence, and mood. A quiet tension often runs through his work, conveyed through intimate eye contact or something just beneath the surface that draws the viewer closer.

Lighting plays a central role in how Munro builds this emotive connection. His use of contrast and sculptural light gives form and depth to his subjects, while his considered compositions and thoughtful approach to both colour and black-and-white add a sense of cohesion and intention. This elevates his work beyond traditional commercial fashion photography into the realm of fine art.

Munro was among a select group of artists commissioned by Giorgio Armani for the exhibition Giorgio Armani: A Retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. His image was chosen for the cover of the official exhibition publication and featured prominently on promotional posters for the landmark show. The exhibition later travelled internationally, including to the Royal Academy of Arts in London, as well as Bilbao, Berlin, Rome, and Los Angeles.

His work was featured in Berlin’s renowned Camera Works Gallery exhibition Camera Work Rocks, including portraits of Charlotte Gainsbourg, Justin Timberlake, and Madonna. His exhibition 72Tokyo – shot over 72 continuous hours, day and night – was presented at The Store X in London, curated by Carrie Scott. This marked a significant moment in his career, highlighting his cinematic approach and pushing his practice in a more experimental direction.

Munro’s choreographed, considered and personal approach has led to longstanding collaborations with leading advertising agencies, art directors, fashion editors, elite hair and makeup artists, publications, luxury brands, and numerous cultural icons over the course of his nearly four-decade career. His monograph Tom Munro, published by Damiani and accompanied by LVMH Moet Hennessy sponsored exhibitions in Los Angeles and Paris, offered insight into these enduring creative relationships.

His artistic evolution has also extended into directing. He was invited to join the Directors Guild of America, and went on to collaborate creatively with Madonna, directing music videos including Give It 2 Me (featuring Pharrell Williams) and Justify My Love, alongside additional film projects and visuals for her Sticky & Sweet World Tour.

Across both still and moving image, his work maintains a consistent sense of narrative depth and emotional sensitivity.

Editorially, his photography has appeared in leading publications such as VogueVanity FairWV Magazine, and Harper’s Bazaar, where his fashion imagery and portraiture continue to stand out for their elegance, poise, and emotional resonance.

Whether working in the studio, on location, or in remote regions, including his charitable work with MEAK in Turkana, Kenya, Munro approaches each project with the same care and sensitivity, creating images that feel thoughtful, honest, and quietly powerful.
